STORIES ROBERTO CONTI (9a part)

WITHOUT AIR CADET

We were in second year of flight school when we started flying the T-34 Mentor, a delight of small plane. We flew every day a couple of hours. An instructor and a single. One morning when all planes had returned, one was missing. There was great anxiety and the comment ran like wildfire ignited by all school units. What will have happened? Could he have killed? Where is he? Everyone was silent as we thought in the difficult situation that the pilot would be exposed.
We present all highly trained to lunch and order. No comment came from the officers on duty. But meanwhile a small scene was about five miles north of the airbase.
An old bus was headed south and stopped to pick up some passengers. They went three and one stayed down talking to the driver. All passengers watched in amazement the young man dressed in a beige flight diver, bloody scratches on his face and hands, leather cap and goggles on his forehead ... and a big lump of beige fabric with green belts also tucked under his arm. The strange man approached the driver and said - Mr driver, please let me go, I am a cadet at the Air Force and going in the direction of the air base a few miles ahead. "I know where he is based. - Said the driver - but I need to pay the fare .- The character mentioned not having a five and that his plane had crash-landed a few miles from there and had to arrive early to school.
The driver looked at his passenger and said - what do you think? Someone pays for it or not I .- We heard all kinds of insults in good Chilean and told the driver that was not miserable and had heart. - Board without an airplane pilot ... .- He said the driver reluctantly the young and the parachute and everything went and sat in the back seat last. Everyone turned to look flushed and scratched the driver seated with worried face while taking the bus speed.
They stopped in front of the grand entrance of the base, got the unfortunate young man with his parachute under his arm and waved to his fellow bus with military-style hand. One of the sergeants of the guard at the entrance saw him and nudged his companion's hand and said, - My Sergeant You see what I see? - Yes, - said the other, - without an airplane is a cadet .- They laughed and one said, - Poor cadet is in charge now the worst of the captains of the school and we having to interrupt his lunch to let him into the basis for this kid .- He called on the intercom to his captain and told him what happened. The sergeant did enter the injured cadet, told him to sit down and if I wanted some water while the captain arrived.
Soon came an officer in blue uniform and white cap. - What happened cadet?
"I had problem with the oil pump, cut the engine and landed with the landing gear up in a field about seven miles here north. There was plenty of grass and well cushioned landing .- Hear cadet is injured or something? I see full of bloody scratches. Seems to have been in a cat fight - No, sir, is that the plane was stopped in a clump of blackberry very high and I took a lot out ... -. - Cadet describe exactly where he left the plane and send the rescue. Prepare for a summary you have to do and write down everything you remember ... if you remember ... - If my captain! - Cried the cadet. The captain sent him to bathe, change clothes and go to the infirmary for consideration by the doctor and rest. While some onlookers began to mock the "cadet no plane" and then the captain shouted, - Ladies gossipy cows to their assignments if they want to kick them milk!

Pilots FACH (Fuerza Aerea de Chile) down from Mentor. Note the parachute hanging from their shoulders.
